Fake noise on electric cars?

I have my reservations about electric cars and I question their overall impact (if any!) in reducing energy consumption and emissions. Regardless of what I think, electric cars are slowly gaining acceptance in the public, and the newer cars like the Nissan Leaf or the Tesla are a far, far cry from older players like the G-Wiz (trust me, it's a horrendous car and it's not worth a google) and networks of rapid charging stations are being built in preparation for widespread usage of electric cars.

That's not the point of the post however. One thing that electric cars do reduce is noise but is it really an enviromental benefit? There is concern that these cars are so silent, pedestrians might not hear them coming! So should electric cars go vroom?

If you watched the Tesla video I linked, I sort of agree with Clarkson. Put on a CD/MP3 of a V8 noises and we're sorted!

Beware of Bulletproof Dog

I was surprised to find out that war dogs are widely deployed in the Middle East, and even more surprised at out of the 80-strong team that took part in the Osama raid, one of them was actually a dog. Quite a bit of money is also being spent on Kevlar vests for these four legged operatives that costs $30,000 that could withstand handgun rounds.

I'm not a dog person, and I wished they'd make one for cats!

Freedom to learn, for free!

It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, a university student or a secondary school dropout, white, black, Asian or orange, everybody deserves access to the diverse knowledge in the world. If you're a uni student like me you'll find these sites very resourceful. Even if you're not a uni student or graduate, then congratulations! The only fee you have to pay is the willingness to learn (trust me, it's miles better than having financial liabilities when you're barely at a quarter of your expected lifetime).

MIT OpenCourseWare - it's part of the OCW consortium and it's a massive collection of previous course materials taught at MIT. The learning resources are a bit sporadic though, and it ranges from partial lecture notes to full recorded lectures and textbooks, and the latter amount is not uncommon for "bricks and mortar" disciplines like mathematics and computer science.

Academic Earth - this site holds a collection of lectures and course materials from some of the top universities in the world, including Harvard, Yale and Oxford on a wide range of courses.

Open Culture - this blog has some a very extensive collection of free podcasts, ebooks and textbooks on various topics. If you're a documentary nut, you'll love the movie section. (John Wayne fans will love it too)

Well, hopefully at this point you don't feel overwhelmed and these will keep your summer pretty much occupied. Stay frosty!

Have a stroll, grow a tree!

Very nifty concept. It's like having a terrarium with lights attached to the lids, so you can go a tree while you take a stroll at night. I'm not a "green" person but I think the idea is pretty cool. Atleast, it's loads better than having to do math to turn on the lights.

You have to love the internet

I've always been interested about forex and I've been scouring the internet for good information on it. Found this wee site with everything you need to know from the basics to technical analysis to trading strategies. Very good stuff, I must say!

Found myself a little treasure chest of classical to modern philosophical texts, too. Speaking of which here's a three part documentary on the lives of three prominent philosophers from the BBC.

Flotilla is an independent, turn-based space strategy game where you control a small flotilla of ships and go on "adventures" around the game world. I love the overall feel to this game! The minimalistic style of the game with its cartoonish artwork really goes well with the stately in-game music. Oh, and did I mention that it's FUN.

I think it's about time I made a post.
